Cambridge Foodie Recommendations – The Clarendon Arms

If you are in Cambridge for the day and you are looking for a great authentic foodie lunch option, then look no further than the Clarendon Arms!

Recently we had a company lunch here to welcome our new General Manger (Tom Groome) to the Let’s Go Punting fold. It has inspired us to produce a short series of recommended local food joints to satisfy those taste buds whilst visiting our amazing City (a word of advice – it’s a good idea to book in advance for these special places to avoid disappointment). All of the recommendations are within a short 10 minute walk of the city centre and are frequently overlooked by the ‘day tripper’.

First Up – The Clarendon Arms

££ – £££ Priced mid – range

(£12 – £18 for a main course)

Is situated just off Parkers Piece; requiring just a small detour to the usual route into the town centre from the main train station. See on the map here:

On arrival at the Clarendon Arms we were warmly welcomed by the manger – a good start. He offered everyone drinks; including a good variety of cask conditioned ales but the pub, luckily, also has a great reputation for a freshly prepared seasonal food menu. I opted for the Seared King Scallops & Maple Glazed Chicken Wings served with Buttered Spinach, Ratatouille, Game Chips & a Sherry Vinegar Jus dish which does sound like a strange combo but did work well for me…..what can I say; I was feeling adventurous! The Scallops were perfectly cooked, seared on the outside and soft in the middle & the sauce with the Chicken Wings brought the whole dish together very nicely.

Tom ordered the Fish & Chips which proved to be a well executed example of the genre. This was then followed by a seriously indulgent pud – Baileys Cheesecake served with Warm Chocolate Sauce – A very unhealthy but deliciously necessary finale to our “working lunch”.

The Clarendon Arms has a genuine Pub feel with an elevated food offering and is our preferred choice of venue for a team meet-up…maybe we’ll see you in there!
A matter of fact – The Pub’s menu also caters for Gluten-free and Vegan requirements and they will usually try to amend their menu to accommodate a broad range of preferences. So if you are a coming to see us @ Let’s Go Punting and you need a slap-up lunch option before or after your Punting extravaganza then you can do much worse than book yourselves in!

Watch this space for other recommended local eateries and haunts which we think will top off your day nicely!

Hope you enjoyed this post,
The Let’s Go Punting Team
