Happy 2015 From Let’s Go Punting

Back to work, back to uni, goodbyes are made on mass in the family homes around our fair city. And the cheese? Ohhhh the cheese that was consumed and is now slowly exiting our pores, whilst we pretend to enjoy splashing our new running trainers with mud at 5 o’clock in the morning.  Personally I stick to one resolution; In the famous words of Bobby McFerrin, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”. So even though the Christmas Dec’s are down, I’m here to lift the spirits up with a little catch up on what has been going on over the last few weeks in Cambridge. Let us start with the food, as this is the most important factor about the festive season. FACT!

Now we all know that we have more Roast Dinners between December 1st – January 2nd  than we do in pretty much our whole lifetime, and no doubt everyone has had their fair share of Next Day Roast Sandwiches. However I have a tale to tell you my friends, about the feast of all feasts down Kings Street.

The Tale of The Urban Shed

As soon as you walk through the magical plastic-strip door, you tumble into a rabbit hole of nostalgia. You may be hungry, but you must wait until you have ventured all the way to the back of the shop and back. Look around and take in these out of context items scattered around like a time capsule grenade has exploded all of it’s goodies for the people of Cambridge to purchase if they wish. Whilst visiting the café with my parents I was confronted by advert of temptation, ‘THE CRIMBO BAP!’. Of course one has to try such a delicacy! Let me talk you through it, from the bottom to the top: Bap, Cranberry Sauce, Bread Sauce, 2 x Roast Carrots, 3 x Roast Parsnips, 2 x Pigs in Blankets, 1 x Decent Sized Turkey Breast, Bap! In addition to this monster of delight there was a cute Brussel Sprout Slaw plus Salad. Whilst reclining in the perfectly placed coach seat with my belt buckle undone I listened to the glorified strings version of Simon & Garfunkle on the Urban Shed’s vintage record player.  The staff have never even flashed a frown, and for some reason they always seem interested in your lunchtime moans about your day thus far. It has been standing strong at the top of all restaurants on Tripadvisor for a few weeks now, so you should really check out what all the fuss is about! Ooh and take your unwanted records down there too you might be able to make a trade or two!

Another Off-The-Beaten-Track establishment that was terribly popular amongst families galore over Christmas was The Punter. This old coach house has been through many different hands over the years including such names as the Rope & Twine, Synotap & the slightly camp Town & Gown but now it has been laid into the hands of Sir Tom Rainey the creator of The Punter. This is a very popular destination for the River Folk to unwind throughout the summer as their courtyard plays host to many a summer flower and a muddle-matched array of furniture, not to mention their glorious selection of Wines and Ales. This Christmas there was a hint of magic about the courtyard as a magical faun and his merry men played folky festive treats to entertain the masses. The masses also sung right back at the music makers with their lovely rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas. Whilst the merriment was flowing through the outside area, The Punter’s converted barn converted into a German Food Market with Mulled Wine & Bradwursts to keep everyone’s bellies nice and warm throughout the night. The manager saw the night as such a success she will be hosting a few more outdoor music nights with the help of the faun and his folk in the near future. Keep your eyes peeled. Until then why not pop in for a cheeky £5 lunch from Mon – Friday? And yes… I said £5! Eat and play Buckeroo, that’s what I do!

Okey kokey pig in a pokey, I think it’s time to brief you about what all that sawing, drilling and general noisemaking is coming from Chesterton Road. Our new tourist shop is now in the final stages of completion before it’s launch in early February. There are many new and exciting touristic channels we are dabbling in ready for the Spring & Summer Season of 2015. Our new Tours Of Cambridge Site is now up and running, so why not have a ganders when you’ve got a few minutes, might be something of interest to you, your friends and family.

I remember there was this fabulous little pub on the seaside coast called The Dew Drop Inn, so please do exactly that if you are in the area. However we do ask you to hold fort until mid-February as it is still in the making until then. After that our door is always open (apart from when we are closed in the evenings, then it will be shut only to keep out the “Lions & Tigers & Bears, Oh My!”). The shop will also be disguised as a swanky Shoreditch showroom sampling some sauve shoots slyly shot by Martin Bond (A* for Alliteration if I must say), so please pop by and say hello.

Until then my Pedigree Chums a little snap from our Christmas Party. Apologies for the naughty elf!
